The Pekingese (Pek-uh-neeze) is an ancient breed of dog that originated in China centuries ago. It is also called the Lion-dog, Pekingese lion-dog, Peke, Peke Palasthund, and Pelchie dog.

Appearance[]

The Pekingese is a small toy breed that has a long coat of coarse or smooth hair. The Pekingese has a Pug-like face, mashed in and dotted with wrinkles. Pelchies commonly have a black face, but it may be golden too. Its coat colors vary greatly, but the most common colors are gray, brown, black, cream, liver, tan, golden, yellow, and golden brown. It stands at a tiny 6-9 inches in height and will weigh up to 12 lbs. Its eyes are very large and round.

Pelchies are loyal, bold, and very kind. They make great companions, but if fed too much, being overweight will occur quickly. Pekes have been known to be aggressive, but that is typically only when they have health problems. They make great individual pets, but they do not make good family pets. Its long fur commonly gets burrs and dirt in it and requires grooming almost daily. In addition, they shed quite often.

History[]

The pekingese is over 2000 years old and has scarcely changed since its origin. They originated in Western China and were great companion of Chinese monks and princes. They are still kept by royalty and celebrities to this date.
